Chef Biography

Chef John Karl Politis, a married father of 2, was born in Sweden to a Swedish mother and a Greek father; the family moved to Greece when John was 2 years old. He discovered his passion for food at a young age and was inspired by watching his parents in the kitchen. At the age of fifteen he took his first steps into the world of Gastronomy and at 18 he attended the Athens School of Hotel & Catering where he received the Greek Higher National Diploma in Cuisine & Pastry. He then further continued his studies in culinary and pastry, at Cordon Bleu, in Canada and London, where he achieved the Grand Diplome in Cordon Bleu.

After his studies John worked within several highly acclaimed establishments such as the Chuchill Intercontinental in London, the Penteliko Hotel in Athens, the Vardis restaurant in Kifissia, the Silver Sea Cruiseliner before deciding to move to Cyprus. Here, he proceeded to work in luxury establishments such as the Le Meridien and Intercontinental Aphrodite Hills. John also worked on the ANT1 television channel, on a morning show presenting his recipes. Since the opening of the Columbia Plaza, John has been the Executive Chef for all the Plaza food outlets.

Chef John Karl has personally cooked for and met several celebrities, including Andreas Papandreou, Giannis Vardinogiannis, Despina Vandi, Sakis Rouvas, Michalis Hadjiyiannis, Despina Olympiou, Linda Papadopoulos and very recently at the Columbia Steak House, Anna Vissi.

Chef John Karl’s ethos for the Steak House is to continue being the “Best Steak House” in town, as per its award from Time Out for exactly that! He is excited about the new menu, as well as the new “Dishes of the Day” and the gorgeous cocktails that can be chosen to accompany them.

For the Columbia Plaza he wishes to continue to supply clients with the best quality of produce, included in exciting, new dishes that will surprise and tantalise the Plaza clients’ palates!
